Mac is a self-employed content marketing specialist and writer, boasting an impressive 18-year journey in the field. However, this wasn't the career he initially envisioned. In this post, we'll delve into Mac's path from a corporate IT background to self-employment.
Mac's original career path led him into the realm of corporate IT, where he spent two decades working in various IT-related roles. His journey took him through programming, tech support, project management, and departmental management, accumulating a wealth of experience along the way.
Over time, Mac began to feel the fatigue of the IT industry. In its early days, when he first entered the field straight out of education, IT professionals were the "mad scientists," tasked with achieving the seemingly impossible. However, two decades later, the landscape had transformed. IT qualifications were no longer rare, and Mac felt the need for a change.
To gain clarity and make a career-defining decision, he embarked on a six-month sabbatical. He rented a house on a serene island in the Gulf of Thailand, hoping to find inspiration.
During his beachside sojourn, he realised the need for a change but lacked a clear direction. However, a chance encounter altered his course. Mac became a regular at a beach bar, where he crossed paths with John, a young web designer.
John approached Mac with a request for assistance in creating content for a website he was designing for a managed IT services company. This seemingly simple request triggered an epiphany. Mac recognised that his skills held the potential for something new.
Early Challenges
With newfound purpose, Mac began exploring opportunities. This was nearly 20 years ago, a time when concepts like Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) had not yet taken root. Google still relied on META keywords for page classification, and the digital landscape was less intricate.
He started searching for platforms that could connect his skills with those in need. He discovered websites like GetAFreelancer (now Freelancer), RenACoder (no longer in existence), and later, Elance (now Upwork). The challenge now was to learn how to secure projects through successful bidding.
Developing a winning bidding strategy took several months, one that Mac still employs today.
The Evolution of Mac's Business
In the early days, content marketing was a relatively new concept. Blogging was emerging, and some marketers were experimenting with article marketing and press releases. As the field evolved, clients began to realise the importance of incorporating content into their marketing strategies.
SEO became a crucial aspect of the digital landscape. New forms of content emerged, including white papers, case studies, how-to guides, and infographics. Video content also gained popularity.
Mac adapted to these changes and, in some cases, pioneered new approaches. For example, he played a significant role in developing content structuring techniques widely used by content writers today.
Networking Played a Big Part at First
During the early stages of his content marketing career, resources were limited. There were no content courses, YouTube tutorials, or dedicated content marketing websites. To navigate this uncharted territory, Mac connected with peers facing similar challenges. They exchanged ideas, shared successes, and learned from each other.
Today, the content community is much larger, with countless professionals in the field.
Late-Game Challenges
As the industry grew, competition intensified. Eighteen years ago, a freelance project might attract only three bidders. However, as freelancing platforms became populated by thousands of professionals, Mac faced more competition. He managed to sustain his career thanks to his expertise, avoiding the lower end of the market.
One of the most significant challenges Mac faces today is competing with AI. Emerging technologies, such as ChatGPT, have had a profound impact on content creators. This is a challenge he continues to grapple with as he seeks his place in the new world of AI-assisted content creation.
Towards the Future
With decades of experience, Mac is now contemplating a change. As someone who has always kept his tech skills up to date, especially in programming, he is considering a career shift. His plan is to combine his tech skills with his marketing expertise by pursuing a career as an indie game developer.
At 56 years old, this could be his final transition in the world of self-employment. He aspires to blend his tech and marketing skills in a new, exciting venture. The journey continues.
